Deliveroo has ‘secret’ plans for a large-scale roll-out of its ‘dark kitchens’ to meet rocketing demand for takeaway food from upmarket restaurants.
That’s according to a Telegraph report, which noted that according to documents seen by The Sunday Telergraph, the delivery business is in negotiations with property agents to launch 150 physical sites nationwide by the end of next year.
Deliveroo launched its ‘RooBox’ concept earlier this year – a pioneering remote kitchen initiative. RooBox gives restaurants access to delivery-only kitchens in key locations, accelerating geographic expansion.
According to the newspaper, the company is planning to take the number of Roobox sites from three to 20 by the end of this year.
Dan Warne, managing director, declined to comment on the plans when pressed by The Telegraph, but told it that: “bespoke delivery-only kitchens are the perfect example of innovation at Deliveroo – it lets our restaurant partners scale to new sites at low risk, while creating amazing new choices for customers.”
The RooBox concept was partly fuelled by funding secured in Series E investment. The £210 million investment was led by Bridgepoint, existing investor DST Global, and General Catalyst with participation from existing investor Greenoaks Capital.
